- What is a Gate Valve?
A gate valve is a linear motion valve primarily used to start or stop the flow of liquids or gases within a pipeline. It operates by raising or lowering a gate (or wedge) perpendicular to the flow direction. When fully open, the gate is completely out of the flow path, allowing unrestricted flow with minimal pressure drop. When fully closed, it provides a tight shut-off to isolate sections of the piping system.
Gate valves are not intended for throttling applications, as partially open operation can cause vibration, erosion, and premature wear. Their robust design makes them ideal for systems requiring full flow and dependable isolation.
