How Industrial Piping Supports the UAE's Desalination Industry
The United Arab Emirates relies heavily on desalination to meet its growing demand for fresh water. With limited natural freshwater resources and a rapidly developing population, industrial and infrastructure projects across the UAE require a dependable and continuous water supply. Desalination plants therefore play a critical role in the country’s water security strategy, while industrial piping systems form one of the most important components within these facilities. From seawater intake and pretreatment to reverse osmosis, post-treatment, storage and water transmission, piping connects almost every stage of a desalination plant. The selection of suitable pipes, fittings, flanges, valves and associated components directly affects plant reliability, efficiency, safety and service life.
The UAE has invested significantly in advanced desalination technologies to strengthen long-term water security. In Dubai, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is increasingly adopting seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO), which requires less energy than conventional multi-stage flash desalination. DEWA’s Hassyan project, for example, has a planned production capacity of 180 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) and is designed to support Dubai’s long-term water security objectives. As desalination capacity expands, the demand for reliable industrial piping infrastructure also increases. Every plant requires extensive piping networks capable of handling seawater, treated water, chemicals, high-pressure streams and concentrated brine
The desalination process begins with seawater intake. Large volumes of seawater must be transported from the marine environment to the plant’s pretreatment facilities. Intake piping must withstand continuous exposure to seawater, which can create significant corrosion challenges. Material selection is therefore particularly important. Depending on the application, project specifications and operating conditions, desalination facilities may use corrosion-resistant alloys, stainless steel, duplex or super duplex materials, non-metallic piping and other engineered solutions. Properly selected piping helps maintain flow capacity while reducing the risk of corrosion, leakage and unplanned maintenance
Before seawater enters the reverse osmosis membranes, it undergoes several pretreatment stages. These can include filtration and other processes designed to remove suspended solids, turbidity and contaminants. DEWA’s Jebel Ali SWRO plant, for example, uses Dissolved Air Flotation and Dual Media Filtration to improve seawater feed quality and protect the reverse osmosis membranes. Industrial piping is essential for transporting seawater, filtered water and treatment chemicals between these stages. Chemical service lines require materials that are compatible with the specific chemicals being handled. Properly specified pipes, fittings and valves help maintain process integrity and minimize the possibility of leaks or premature component failur
Reverse osmosis is increasingly important in the UAE’s desalination strategy. In an SWRO plant, seawater is pressurized and passed through semi-permeable membranes to separate water from dissolved salts. This makes high-pressure piping a critical part of the system. Piping components must be selected according to operating pressure, temperature, fluid characteristics, corrosion requirements and applicable engineering standards. High-pressure pumps, pipes, fittings, flanges and valves must work together as a reliable system. Any failure within this section can affect production, increase maintenance requirements and potentially result in costly downtime
After the reverse osmosis process, concentrated seawater or brine remains. This stream must be safely transported and managed. Brine piping can be exposed to highly saline conditions, making corrosion resistance a major consideration. The correct combination of material, wall thickness, fittings and joining methods helps ensure that the system can operate reliably under demanding conditions. For desalination operators, effective brine handling is important not only for plant performance but also for maintaining environmental and operational requirements
Once desalinated water has passed through the RO process, it may undergo post-treatment before entering storage or the water distribution network. The piping used for treated and potable water must meet applicable quality, hygiene and engineering requirements. Reliable piping systems help prevent contamination, maintain water quality and provide a dependable connection between the desalination plant, storage facilities and transmission infrastructure. The scale of UAE desalination projects also means that water transmission infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. In 2025, DEWA awarded a contract for 32 km of 1,200 mm-diameter glass-reinforced epoxy water transmission lines connected to the Hassyan water plant, demonstrating the scale of infrastructure required to move desalinated water into the wider network
Material selection is one of the most important considerations when designing piping for desalination facilities. Seawater, brine, chemicals, high pressure and changing operating conditions can place significant demands on piping components.
Engineers typically evaluate factors such as:
- Corrosion resistance
- Pressure and temperature ratings
- Chemical compatibility
- Mechanical strength
- Expected service life
- Maintenance requirements
- Applicable ASME, ASTM and project standards
The right material can reduce corrosion-related failures, extend equipment life and improve overall plant reliability
Desalination projects require consistent quality throughout the piping supply chain. Pipes, fittings, flanges and related components should be sourced according to approved specifications and applicable international standards. Documentation such as Material Test Certificates (MTCs), dimensional inspection reports, pressure-test records and other quality documents can be important for project traceability and compliance. For EPC contractors and water infrastructure developers in the UAE, working with experienced industrial piping suppliers can help ensure that materials are supplied according to project specifications, required standards and delivery schedules
The UAE’s desalination industry is moving toward larger, more energy-efficient SWRO facilities supported by clean-energy initiatives. DEWA aims to add 240 MIGD of SWRO desalination capacity by 2030, with the objective of producing desalinated water using a clean-energy mix and waste heat. As plants become larger and more technologically advanced, industrial piping will remain fundamental to their operation. Advanced materials, improved corrosion protection, efficient hydraulic design and better monitoring technologies can further improve piping reliability
Industrial piping is much more than a network for transporting fluids within a desalination plant. It is an essential part of the infrastructure that enables seawater intake, pretreatment, reverse osmosis, chemical treatment, brine management, potable water handling and transmission. With the UAE continuing to invest in desalination and water security, demand for high-quality pipes, fittings, flanges and associated industrial components is expected to remain strong. Reliable piping solutions help desalination facilities operate safely, efficiently and continuously—supporting the UAE’s long-term vision for sustainable and secure water resources
